Notes on Fabric

This dress is made from a satin-weave silk and cotton from Uzbekistan’s Fergana Valley. The Fergana Valley is the most important center of Central Asian silk production, where women have been cultivating cocoons, reeling them into thread, and weaving fabric on wooden floor looms since late antiquity. 100% SILK works with a family of seventh-generation dyers and weavers to produce its silk.

The Cintemani suit is brocaded by master embroiderer (zarduz) Mirshod Farmanov in Bukhara, Uzbekistan. The art of arranging gold metal threads in parallel rows on a ground fabric, and then couching them with silk thread has a long history in Bukhara. Examples have been found dating back to the 7th century when the first gold mines were excavated. Once reserved for the clothes of the nobility, today the technique is used only for special occassions such as weddings. A brocaded wedding robe can take up to 3 years to make.
