Designer Jenia Kim is one an estimated half-million Koreans in the former Soviet Union who composed the diaspora known as the Koryo-Saram. Though she now lives in Moscow, she was born in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, to Korean parents who belonged to a community that had been forcibly moved to Central Asia by Stalin in the late 1930s. To work on her SS20 collection, Kim moved to Uzbekistan for six months to study the country's customs, traditions and textile techniques. The Picnic Bag is inspired by the Uzbek dowry and the craftswomen who make it.
