Original artwork by George Valris. Approaching his work as a textured painting, each section of each piece uses a different beading technique to denote depth, movement, and grain.
Dambalha is one of the most important of all spirits in Haitian Vodou and Louisiana Voodoo traditions. Dambalha is said to be the Sky Father, the primordial creator of all life. In the Vodou societies that view Dambalha as the primordial creator, it is believed he created the cosmos by using his 7,000 coils to form the stars and the planets in the heavens and to shape the hills and valleys on earth. In this piece Dambalha is represented by a life giving palm, surrounded by birds of paradise and worshiping figures.
Haitian artist Georges Valris expands upon many hundreds of years of traditional practices to formulate his beautifully adorned, highly distinctive mixed media artworks. Known for his hand beaded, highly embellished works Valris is inspired by the rich and expansive history of Haiti as well as by his upbringing in the Vodou religion.
