Despite being one of the oldest techniques used to create cloth, weaving has remained elementally unchanged since antiquity. Cloth is always created from the interlacement of threads: warp and weft. Warp threads are tied on a loom and are lifted or lay flat in patterned combinations while the weft thread is thrown through. This movement is repeated over and over and the threads accumulate to a length of cloth. Through these simple, forever mechanics come infinite expressions of structure, texture, function and beauty. And with a closer look, endless stories of a time and place and how people live their days. While these stories continually fold, weaving at its core remains steadfastly unchanged. As such, there is something inherently transportive and connective about cloth and at 100% Silk we exalt these poetics.
100% Silk showcases independent designers from around the world, often exclusively. These designers have savoir-faire, working with fine materials and practicing specialized techniques with a depth of skill, imbuing distinct values in what and how they create. Their work often draws from historical fabrication methods but celebrates the ways culture, agriculture, and industry interlace vibrantly and interestingly today. We curate clothing, textiles, perfumes, accessories and household objects that feel electric, bringing a wholehearted sense of joy, an essence of fantasy and aim to bring those who acquire them closer to their full expression. The clothing we curate ranges from the most opulent crochet bellwork dress to the perfect black t-shirt with the throughline that the designs fit your bodies exquisitely. Our deepest fulfillment comes from sharing an environment to notice all the detailed richness when something is made uniquely with integrity and care.
100% Silk has an eponymous house line designed by the shop’s founder Lee Dekel, carried alongside all our featured designers. 100% Silk collaborates with artisans locally and internationally to create ever-evolving clothing and accessories collections using handwoven, naturally dyed, and appliqued materials.
Since 2018 100% Silk has grown beyond its store operations to occasionally serve as a fine art gallery, education space, fabrication studio, dining room, dancehall, and more. Endless folds. Through the many relationships we’ve built with artists, designers and various communities over the years alongside the ever-changing shape of our own lives and interests, it has felt natural and exciting to evolve and connect this way.
The 100% Silk team is small but mighty and as artists ourselves have worked across many disciplines and in many modes of creation in the textile industry. We value unusual beauty and intuition which shape the many folds of our day to day activities, from the interior design of our brick and mortar store to the editorial images we style and shoot. In many ways 100% Silk mirrors the values of our designers, moving with an intentional care for meaningful details, a poetic quality of time and welcoming irregularities that are exciting and true.
