Very special vintage Ewe Kente cloth from circa 1940. This textile features a variegated stripe pattern in shades of mauve, pink and green. Accented with floating weft designs in saturated colours and mixed stripe patterns, however the overall effect is muted and would look lovely in any room.
Considered one of the most significant textiles of the African subcontinent, kente cloth was historically made from silk, reserved for chiefs and kings, and worn as festive dress on special occasions, such as a gathering of elders or the inauguration of new royalty. This style of kente cloth comes from the Ewe people of Togo and Ghana. Ewe kente abounds with proverbial symbolism of both animal and inanimate kind. Ewe kente cloths are some of the most highly prized by textile collectors worldwide because of the sheer skill and variety of styles they exhibit.
