DISCOURSE IN WILD STRAWBERRY
- Description
This teapot is made in porcelain and painted with cobalt oxide. It took six weeks to make, progressing through the full process of building, drying, first firing, painting, glazing, and final firing to become a finished piece. Food safe and liquid tight. The work emerges from Tülay Kulbay's exploration of her layered cultural heritage, Turkish, Swedish, and French, and her ongoing dialogue with materials, form, and the body.
The wild strawberry motif draws from Swedish culture. Smultronstället, meaning "wild strawberries" or a "secret place", evokes hidden spots of personal significance. It also references Ingmar Bergman's film 'Wild Strawberries', in which the journey of memory and reflection uncovers intimate, emotional landscapes. The strawberry's shape echoes an anatomical heart, a visual motif repeated across Kulbay's work alongside eggs and other forms, symbolizing vulnerability, desire, and protection.
Two hand painted birds appear on the teapot, facing one another beneath the strawberry, engaged in a gentle, open ended discourse. Their meaning is intentionally left to the viewer's interpretation. They might suggest freedom, transformation, rebirth, or simply the presence of a bird.
The set exists between function and symbolism, reflecting Kulbay's sculptural intuitive approach to ceramics, where the material and making process guide the final form.

We will exchange or refund all regular-priced clothing items if posted by trackable mail or courier within 4 days of receipt. The item must arrive to the shop within 14 days of posting. For refunds, you will be refunded the cost of the returned items at the time of purchase minus a return fee of $10.
